Moving Gently to Embody Gentleness
Have you ever noticed how you move throughout the day? After I began yoga, I began to realize how hurried and tense I often moved. Rarely was I going about my daily business gently or consciously. I also began to notice that the body, mind and breath (I like to think of breath as spirit) tend to play follow the leader. And it didn’t really seem to matter which was playing the role of leader. If my mind was racing, so was my body and breath. If my body was racing, my mind and breath followed the lead. Speeding up the breath tended to make my mind, thoughts and body tense.
I wanted a spirit that was gentle and serene, not one that was tense and hurried.
I started to realize that to slow down fully—in body, mind and spirit—I needed to consciously slow down one of the three areas. I tend toward worry and anxiety often making my thoughts hard for me to gain control of, sending me into a tailspin. However, my body and my breath tend to be easier for me to get a grip on. Perhaps because body and breath are more tangible than thoughts. I can literally feel my body and I can feel the texture, depth and temperature of my breath when I am focused on it.
The practice of moving gently and consciously helps me to slow down my breathing and eventually my mind will follow. Slowly but surely, I begin to feel a little more serene. I begin to embody gentleness.
I hope you will join me on youtube for a simple morning stretch and meditation as a reminder to move gently as you go about your day. My hope and prayer is that with practice, together we can become spirits filled with gentleness and serenity.
